Himantolophidae groenlandica

Himantolophidae groenlandica, 30 cm.
(Fodboldfisk in Danish)

Thanks to Peter Rask Møller and Theodore W. Pietsch.

Females are distributed in tropical and subtropical waters including Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and Indonesian basins. They are located in the mesopelagic between about 200 and 1,000 m.

This species is believed to have ‘’non-parasitic free-living males’’, which is a rarity for this group of deep-sea fish.
